Community Health Screening Fair at Potluck
The Health Policy student interest group at OHSU sponsored a free health
screening clinic and informational fair on May 3rd as one of their several
planned activities for Cover the Uninsured Week. The event was held in the
parking garage below O'Bryant Square before Potluck's Sunday meal. Thanks to all
who generously donated their time and support to help those in need.
The Planning Committee, chaired by second year medical student Gina Miller, met
for several months to organize this event. 216 patients were seen, 114 students
volunteered representing five schools, eight physicians participated, and the
VA's Outreach Van served at least six veterans. Also, 29 patients were
registered with the Oregon Prescription Drug Program. Mark Richardson, Dean,
OHSU School of Medicine, stopped by to see this successful collaboration.
Eight agencies provided information and referral services, and interpreters were
present to assist patients. As a bonus, a few very busy volunteers provided
haircuts to 44 people during the four hours of the fair.
The Oregon Medical Assn. provides money to the student group to pay for Cover
the Uninsured Week activities. The Health Policy Group is committed to having
this clinic in conjunction with Potluck in the Park on an annual basis.
